EXPO 2010 Greek Pavillion

Shanghai China, 2000 m2

The theme for Expo 2010 in Shanghai is “Better city,
Better Life”. The inspiration for the Greek pavilion was
derived from the multilayered reality of Greece today
and it is rooted in a city’s collective/collected memory.
The Greeks have learned to live on top of their history;
this inspired the design of a contemporary ‘dig’. The
pavilion’s shell mirrors the tents and canopies found at
archaeological sites under excavation, forming a vast
protective ‘mantle’ which is lifted to reveal what lies
within. On the lowest, most archaic level, we find an
archetypal Greek amphitheatre which, shaped by the
terrain, is incorporated into it like ancient theatres in
their natural environment. A spiralling ramp begins
at its lowest tiers before climbing up to the container
grid. The modern urban structure overflies the theatre
and the earth. It is rooted in it, built on it, but acquires
its own distinct form.
The city–ship; the city that contains and combines
different civilisations by means of the goods, ideas and
customs it conveys.
